Growing a senior team
A media company CEO came to us because her organization had doubled in size over the previous 18 months, and her senior people, while smart and competent, seemed overwhelmed by the sudden "bigness" of their jobs. They were too involved in the day-to-day and they weren't working together as a team.First, we helped them create a clear and compelling vision for their company's future, then move toward that vision with practical strategies. For instance, they aspired to function as a team of real leaders. Their strategies? Improve their leadership and management skills as a group and as individuals, and learn how to work together to put more of their focus on strategy and less on day-to-day tactics and tasks.
This senior team has implemented these strategies using a variety of Proteus tools. For instance, Proteus designed and conducted group skill-building sessions in areas where they all wanted to improve--such as delegation and strategic thinking. We've also coached these leaders (and most of their direct reports) one-on-one to help them address individual management and leadership challenges.
Proteus also facilitated bi-monthly team meetings during our first year with them, both to provide a framework for addressing strategic issues and to model effective meeting facilitation.
The team has stayed largely intact--one executive moved on to a bigger job in another company--and they are managing and leading much larger departments than before, while working together as a true senior team to craft the company's future.
