Improving the quality of learning

It makes business sense for professional services companies to invest heavily in employee development. Professional services are only as good as the people providing them. Supporting these people with essential learning will immediately improve the quality of the services they provide.

Last year, a professional services client realized that they were underestimating the importance of a critical part of the "learning equation": the facilitator. They saw that a strong facilitator can wring value out of a sketchy course design or a challenging group situation; a weak facilitator can undermine the best of courses. As we explored the situation with them, the client understood that one Proteus LearningPath™ service, Facilitate for Learning, could help them address their challenge.

Proteus' audit of the company's in-class facilitation revealed that most of the quality problems were systemic. Facilitators weren't clear about their responsibilities and course owners lacked a standard approach for selecting the right people to lead classes. Feedback about facilitators was gathered haphazardly and rarely used for professional development.

Proteus and the company's learning professionals are building an infrastructure for quality facilitation. It includes facilitator profiles that clearly define key areas of contribution, the person's current capability in each area, and a plan for improvement where needed. We've also created a credentialing system based on demonstrated strengths in these areas. Finally, we're establishing which areas of contribution are most critical to the success of a given class, giving course owners a simple and fair way to select the right facilitator for their class.

Now our client has a way to create and maintain consistently high quality in this pivotal point of the learning process. Their facilitators can provide employees with critical skills in a way that allows them to leave the classroom ready and able to use what they've learned.
